Who Are Physical Therapists?

Mission: The Nazareth College Physical Therapy Program prepares compassionate professionals who are life-long learners and critical inquirers that practice collaboratively and engage with a changing world. Salaries vary based on position, years of experience, degree of education, geographic location and practice setting. The KSPT faculty is an exceptional group of clinicians and scholars dedicated to excellence in physical therapy education. Physical therapists use different forms of treatment depending on the type of patient they are caring for.

The Virginia Board of Physical Therapy in accordance with Section 18VAC112-20-131(C) of the Regulations, entitled Continued Competency Requirements for Renewal of an Active License”, exempts a licensee from the continuing competency requirements for the first biennial renewal following the date of initial licensure by examination in Virginia.

Physical therapists provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes. Our fully accredited DPT program was one of the first graduate physical therapy programs in the nation and is ranked in the top 25% of physical therapy programs by U.S. News & World Report. This speciality of physical therapy is most often found in the out-patient clinical setting. Integumentary physical therapy includes the treatment of conditions involving the skin and all its related organs. Physical therapists spend much of their time on their feet, working with patients. The ASU Physical Therapy Department was granted full accreditation by the CAPTE on October 30, 2002.

Individuals who are well prepared in the field of physical therapy will continue to play a vital role in health care in the future. Today’s physical therapist is required to complete a graduate degree – either a masters or clinical doctorate – from an accredited education program. The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award master’s and doctoral degrees.

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association offers a curriculum of continuing education courses in orthopaedics and manual therapy. Seton Hall’s comprehensive Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) program prepares students to practice safely and ethically – and to treat patients who face a multitude of conditions. The need for physical therapists is expected to remain strong into the foreseeable future as the US population ages and the demand for physical therapy services grows. These figures can be very instructive when assessing which programs produce the biggest contributors in the physical therapy industry. All physical therapists must receive a graduate degree from an accredited physical therapist program before taking the national licensure exam that allows them to practice. Neurological physical therapy is a field focused on working with individuals who have a neurological disorder or disease.

In the province of Quebec, physical rehabilitation therapists are health care professionals who are required to complete a three-year college diploma program in physical rehabilitation therapy and be member of the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) in order to practise legally in the country.

Physical therapy helps develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability to a body threatened by age, injury, disease or environmental factors. Although many physical therapists practice in hospitals, more than 80% practice in other settings, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Physical therapists work as part of a healthcare team, overseeing the work of physical therapist assistants and aides and consulting with physicians and surgeons and other specialists. The body of knowledge of physical therapy is large, and therefore physical therapists may specialize in a specific clinical area.

UIndy’s Physical Therapy Assistant program gives you an efficient, flexible point of entry into the physical therapy field. Physical therapist Sandra ‘Buffy’ Wojciehowski ’04/D.P.T. ’07 helps patients, including Eric LeGrand, find strength after grave injury. Physical Therapy encompasses physical, psychological, emotional, and social well being. A growing majority of programs offer the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. Graduates who are innovative leaders in physical therapy and who are integral members of the inter-professional healthcare team. Physical therapists are on their feet much of the day and spend a great deal of time using their bodies to work with patients or to lift and move them.
